Garry K

biography

From the early days of acid house Garry´s ear was tuned into the new sound that was pumping from the underground scene. In the early nineties Garry was inspired by such icon´s as Carl Cox and his demonstration of skills upon the turntables. Garry continued with his fascination with music through the ever changing sound that we know today as jungle / drum & bass. Garry was keen to be part of it´s progress; primarily as a DJ. From gaining recognition from local events his career pounced into the bigger picture, consequently he continued with his enthusiastic need for precision as a DJ. Club Sidewinder was to be one of his first main residencies, although the new garage scene breaking through dominated the event itself and the drum & bass artist´s were placed in second arena´s; Garry K jumped at the prospect to progress & get noticed as the new talented raising stock. The garage scene was increasingly gaining momentum at this time and the Drum & bass scene in general seemed to have passed it´s pinnacle.

During the late 90´s, event´s throughout the country seemed mainly dominated by garage orientated parties Garry was not fazed by this and continued to support drum & bass through difficult time´s taking this low period to look into music production. In 2000 he had the opportunity to write and produce a drum & bass tune with ZED BIAS who, at that time had a successful hit with a garage tune ironically! The tune Garry & Zed produced wasn´t great in today´s expectations but it was an important learning curve for understanding music production. 2001 witnessed the re-launch of Helter Skelter / Sidewinder event as a joint venture. This led to the birth of the Accelerated culture event; which Garry K was fortunate enough to be part of and his DJ residency flourished with them. In 2003 he was nominated for best newcomer in the national UK drum & bass awards, up against breaking artist´s like Friction, Hazard...etc. From this many new opportunities were available and Garry´s success as a DJ opened doors across boarders and into Europe.

Garry K´s flavour can only be described as ‘tough jump up’ with lot´s of warm deep basslines and ‘gangsta step’ style tunes. He can pretty much cover almost all genre´s in his set which make´s Garry k´s performance interesting; combined with his DJ´ing skills on par with the most aspiring artist´s out there. Garry acknowledged that writing music would become an important asset and a valuable ambition to his DJ´ing. Many tunes he has worked on remained on dubplate and merely became part of a testing ground with his new sounds. Not totally satisfied with his output Garry looked out for up and coming engineers to work with to help progress with the sound he was continuously trying to achieve. Eventually Garry met up with a guy called ‘specialist sound´ and they both produced a track called ‘The switch´ which will debut early next year. Garry K´s involvement with Blackwidow records has led to several studio projects in the pipeline working with RV and WICKAMAN will see many great idea´s brought back to life and several release´s are deemed imminent on this new record label.
